Are glass paintings still in vogue?

The first glass painting was made by a French artist. They named it as Gemmail. This means Enamel Gem in French. Glass paintings. Since 1930 when glass paintings were officially made, there has always been a buzz with such paintings. The biggest question now is – Are glass paintings still in vogue?

Over the years glass paintings started getting recognition. People loved these artworks for the way they reflected light. Glass paintings were originally made by Phonecians. Later on, the Romans took over this art form. Glass paintings have been in existence since the 2nd century.

Of late the studio glass movement increased the popularity of glass paintings. Overall, the glass paintings are therefore split into three stages. They are –

EARLY GLASS ART 

There is enough proof to affirm the claim that glass painting was initiated during the 2nd century. This art form became famous throughout the Roman Empire. The most common types of paintings were mostly in the form of pitchers and goblets. The technique of glass blowing spread out to distant places like Italy and Egypt. 

MIDDLE AGES

There were huge developments in glass artwork during the Renaissance period. The Franks and the Byzantines started using the glass-blowing methods more often.  The Byzantine glass artists also added a religious touch and used most of the artwork for Christian and Jewish worship places. By the 7th century, churches and monasteries started employing glass artists to decorate their buildings. Thereby, laying a strong foundation for tremendous growth in the glass artwork. 

MODERN GLASS ART

Fast forward to the 1960s, colleges and universities started having glass art as a regular course. The number of education institutes offering glass art as a full-time course is constantly growing. However, not everyone goes to college to study art. Therefore, the number of glass artists is countless. A proper census of the artists involved in this art form will give a small idea of the approximate number of artists.
